ABOUT US

Stones & Waves Veterinary Clinic and Wildlife Center is the first organization of its kind in Nicaragua. With the assistance of dedicated veterinarians and volunteer veterinary nurses and interns, our staff, who represent various universities around the world, provides a wide range of animal rescue, animal healthcare, rehabilitation, and wildlife services and experiences.

Our clinic is a component of Fundación A. Jean Brugger and a partner to Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas Hotel and Resort. We proudly share in their joint mission to conduct business in a socially responsible manner and to deliver educational opportunities and positive community impacts for the San Juan del Sur region. Our vet clinic not only provides critical care for area animals and wildlife, but a way for the community to learn more about the importance of caring for and preserving natural resources.

Our mission

Our goal is to establish a professionally-maintained, education-based endangered species captive breeding and release center for the benefit of the people and wildlife of the San Juan del Sur region.

Our organization depends on donations of funds, medical supplies and other resources to fulfill our mission. Unfortunately, extreme import duties and taxes make receiving physical goods through the postal service costly and impractical, so we are grateful for financial contributions from supporters, no matter how small.

Poverty plays a significant role in species and habitat destruction around the world, and Nicaragua is no exception. Many animals in this region are captured (poached) for resale as pets or for the garment industry. Some are also utilized as traditional foods.

As funds allow anti-poaching programs are implemented in association with local law enforcement authorities. Conservation education is the long-term solution to species degradation and habitat destruction.

the animals of piedras y olas

During your stay at Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas you may notice various species of wildlife on the property. The majority of these animals were abandoned or abused by humans who had taken them temporarily as pets and were later unable to care for them. For physical and/or emotional reasons these animals cannot be released, as they are tame and unable to survive in the wild. They have now become members of the Piedras y Olas family. If you like a guided tour of our animals on the property, please contact reception.

Remember: These are still wild animals and should be approached with caution at all times, or better yet, with an SWVC assistant present.

All animals that cannot be released play an important role in the ongoing development of wildlife conservation education programs for local children and adults, international school groups, travelers and social organizations.

a community effort

Local businesses help support the center in various ways.

As medical supplies allow, our organization provides no-fee animal healthcare assistance for local residents working with draft animals, such as horses or oxen, as well as for local pets.

we need your help

The number of animals received by our clinic increases weekly. All donations are greatly appreciated and may be placed in the donation envelopes available in the rooms and handed into reception, or paid directly through reception.

The majority of animals at our site come from remote areas. Most are injured or sick. These animals require immediate medical care and specialized food on a regular basis. In order to provide assistance to these animals, our staff requires medications, food, syringes, bandages, antibiotics, and of course, transportation and fuel to reach animals in more remote areas.

Please make checks payable to: Piedras y Olas Hotel & Resort, c/o Stones & Waves Veterinary Clinic. For donations of equipment or vehicles, please contact the email address below.
