ABOUT US

Our sanctuary is an active component of Fundación A. Jean Brugger and a partner to Piedras y Olas Hotel. We proudly share in their joint mission to conduct business in a socially responsible manner and to develop educational opportunities and positive community impacts for the San Juan del Sur region.

We began as a nonprofit veterinary clinic, dedicated to quality animal healthcare, and have quickly grown into a fulltime operation committed to caring for a variety of animal species. Our sanctuary provides a safe haven for an array of Nicaraguan wildlife and domestic animals that have been brought to us by community members in their efforts to rescue abandoned, mistreated and/or injured animals. Due to the nature of how particular animals have come to us, issues such as animal trafficking, taking wildlife as pets and animal cruelty have become very apparent.

Our sanctuary consists of a veterinary clinic and houses a variety of Nicaraguan wildlife and domesticated animals. Unfortunately many of our current wildlife cannot be released back into their natural habitat for various reasons. Taking this into account we are committed to giving them the best life possible and to educate others on wildlife and animal care.

As a nonprofit organization, we rely on dedicated donors and organizations to provide us with necessary materials such as medical supplies, funding and resources to fulfill our mission.

Our key objectives are the following:

  • Provide free spay and neuter services to control the population of unwanted, uncared for and sick animals
  • Offer no fee animals services to local residents
  • Provide a safe haven for abandoned, injured and/or sick animals
  • To establish a regular rotation of veterinarians through our clinic

Our goals for the near future are to:

  • Provide educational opportunities and programs for the community and individuals in the veterinary and/or wildlife profession
  • Strive for the conservation, protection, and research of wildlife
  • Promote and assist in the creation and management of protected habitat areas of wildlife
  • Foster an attitude of anti-animal cruelty among local youth
  • Discourage the practice of utilizing wild animals as pets

The animals of piedras y olas

During your stay at Piedras y Olas we ask that you visit our sanctuary and meet our various species of wildlife on the property. The majority of these animals were abandoned or abused by humans who had taken them temporarily as pets and were later unable to care for them. For physical and/or emotional reasons many of the animals living with us cannot be released however, they play an important role in the ongoing development of wildlife conservation and educational programs for local children and adults, international school groups, travelers and social organizations.

Guided tours can be arranged. Please contact the front desk or see contact information below.

Remember: These are still wild animals and should be approached with caution at all times, or better yet, with a Stones & Waves animal handler present.
