Socially Responsible Tourism

As a country, Nicaragua's history has been culturally diverse, politically complex, and all too often ravaged by natural disasters. Yet despite facing adversity in the past, the country and its people have demonstrated an indefatigable resilience of character and spirit, and move ever forward.

Tourism is an important foundation of Nicaragua's bright future, and an industry that is poised to bring tremendous advances to the nation's economy, cities, and transportation systems. It also has the potential to adversely impact Nicaragua's historically unspoiled environment and inimitable culture, if not planned for and managed appropriately.

Our Mission

At Pelican Eyes... Piedras y Olas, we take our role in the local and national community very seriously and strive to be a model for other businesses. It is our goal to be an active, vibrant, welcoming, and responsible member of the community of San Juan del Sur, and to extend this community with others by sharing the tremendous beauty, history, and adventure our country provides.

Our mission is divided into two distinct yet inter-related parts:

  • Hospitality Mission: Simply put, Piedras y Olas seeks to deliver a world of difference. Our mission is to provide a unique and memorable experience in every aspect of a guest's stay. Our seasoned and friendly staff endeavors to anticipate and fulfill every possible need or special request (and to predict those wishes perhaps not yet even realized!).From gourmet dining with a Nicaraguan flair to dramatic ocean views; from locally hand-crafted hardwood furniture to painstakingly hand-sewn linens; from lush tropically landscaped gardens to high-ceilinged rooms and flowing curved lines — Piedras y Olas puts quality and attention to detail first. Guests notice the difference and that makes all the difference to us.
  • Social Mission: Piedras y Olas plays a proactive and vital role in the development and sustainability of our community, and especially its children. Through a partnership with the Fundación A. Jean Brugger, Piedras y Olas provides educational funds, school uniforms, on-site vocational training, and long-term employment for hundreds of young people of San Juan del Sur and surrounding communities. By matching individual committed donors with promising students, Piedras y Olas seeks to demonstrate the dramatic impact a single individual can have on an entire community.

Further, we seek to contribute to our community by modeling fair trade and fair employment practices, by purchasing and featuring locally crafted goods and materials wherever possible, adhering to environmentally-conscious building methods, utilizing natural energy resources such as solar energy, and by responsibly recycling and/or disposing of waste materials.

The role of a business in any community is one of give and take, respect for regional peoples and concerns, and consideration for the shared environment. In a developing country, this role becomes increasingly more important. A business or industry can dramatically and positively transform its community, and it can also swiftly inflict irreparable harm.
