Located just north of San Juan del Sur, Granada is approximately 45-60 minutes' drive by car to Pelican Eyes…Piedras y Olas Hotel & Resort.
- Border Crossing between Costa Rica & Nicaragua: The border crossing at Peñas Blancas is very busy and delays are frequent, especially during the holidays (Christmas and Easter). Please keep this in mind as you make your travel plans and strive for patience. You will be in a beautiful and relaxing place very soon! The border crossing is open daily between 6:00am and 8:00pm.
- Rental Cars & Inter-country Bus Transportation: Rental cars are generally not allowed to cross the border between countries. It is best to contact your rental car company first to double check their policy - a good one to try is Alamo at www.alamocostarica.com. To travel from Liberia, Costa Rica to San Juan del Sur, you may wish to take a taxi to the border and arrange transportation with us at Piedras y Olas from the border to our hotel. Or, the Tica Bus and Nica Bus make stops in Liberia and Rivas (Rivas is approximately 30 minutes from San Juan del Sur), and you can take an inexpensive taxi ride from Rivas to San Juan del Sur.
- Immigration & Customs: Tourists and Costa Rican citizens do not have to pay any fees upon leaving Costa Rica; however foreign residents living in Costa Rica must pay a $20 departure tax. North American and most European countries are not required to have a visa to enter Nicaragua, but they will need a passport that does not expire within six months, and a small entry fee is required ($10) when arriving at the Managua International Airport. Costa Rican residents or nationals must have a visa to enter Nicaragua, which can be obtained at the Nicaraguan Consulate of the country of residency, and by paying a $25 fee.
