Because we are long-time residents of San Juan del Sur, we at Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas play a proactive and vital role in the development and sustainability of our community, especially its children. In fact, supporting and providing for the community was the impetus for building our hotel.

Through a vital partnership with the Fundación A. Jean Brugger we provide educational funds, school uniforms, on-site vocational training, and long-term employment for hundreds of young people of San Juan del Sur and surrounding communities. By matching individual committed donors with promising students, Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas seeks to demonstrate the dramatic impact a single individual can have on an entire community.

Three integral programs are at the core of the Fundación A. Jean Brugger: a school uniform program, educational scholarships, and hands-on job training. Additional programs include family support, conservation and environmental programs, visual and creative arts programs, and more — each having a positive impact on not only the students, but also their families, neighbors, and the community at large.

Since its inception in 1999, the Fundación A. Jean Brugger has provided educational opportunities and resources to more than 500 children and young adults with the help of donations from local, national, and international donors and through its unique partnership with Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas.

Residents of San Juan del Sur since 1987, the management team at Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas has forged long-term relationships with local trades people, suppliers, and artists to ensure that your home is built with integrity, pride, respect for the environment and authentic, uniquely Nicaraguan details. In fact, if it weren’t for these local trades people and our partnership with the Fundación A. Jean Brugger our hotel and villas wouldn’t exist.

As a founding member of the San Juan Del Sur Development Community Association, we are working directly with the government to improve methods for energy and water conservation. We contribute to the community by modeling fair trade and fair employment practices, by purchasing and featuring locally crafted goods and materials wherever possible, adhering to environmentally-conscious building methods, utilizing natural energy resources such as solar energy, and by responsibly recycling and/or disposing of waste materials. This commitment to providing owners and guests with unparalleled hospitality through social and environmental sustainability inspired President Enrique Bolaños to hail the hotel as a national model. Since opening, Pelican Eyes...Piedras y Olas has been featured in Condé Nast Traveler, The Los Angeles Times, Outside Magazine, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, and numerous other prestigious travel publications.
