The Fundación A. Jean Brugger is a nonprofit foundation devoted to assisting Nicaragua through education and development of one of the country's most valuable and treasured resources: its young people. Our mission is to provide critical educational opportunities and vocational training for the residents of San Juan del Sur and surrounding communities. The Foundation's primary goal is to educate and empower individuals and build a base of knowledge and awareness of crucial social, cultural, and environmental issues. Recognizing that the ongoing development and economic progress of Nicaragua rests on future generations, the Foundation actively seeks to foster educated and enlightened individuals who are committed to participating in and giving back to their local communities.
The Foundation's core activities consist of three integral programs, including a school uniform program, educational scholarships, and hands-on job training. These programs provide necessary tuition, school supplies and clothing, practical skills training, and part-time jobs to ensure the ongoing secondary and university education of more than twenty local students each year. Additional programs include family support, conservation and environmental programs, visual and creative arts programs, and more — each of which impacts not only the students, but also their families, neighbors, and the community at large.
Since its inception in 1999, the Foundation has provided educational opportunities and resources to more than 500 children and young adults with the help of donations from local, national, and international donors and through its unique partnership with the Pelican Eyes... Piedras y Olas hotel project.
Founders
Jean Brugger, President: Ms. Brugger has been actively involved in Central America for more than fifteen years and has lived in Nicaragua since 1998. With a background in health and human services and education, Jean brings several decades of tremendous experience, knowledge, and commitment to the Foundation. A retired R.N., Red Cross nurse, and former director of an international holistic nursing organization, Jean's knowledge of human challenges and the specific educational needs of Central American communities are invaluable to the Foundation and to the residents of San Juan del Sur.
Chris R. A. Berry, Vice President: A fifteen-year resident of San Juan del Sur with dual American and Nicaraguan citizenship, Mr. Berry is founder and manager of Hotel Pelican Eyes... Piedras y Olas, a unique, socially conscious, real estate development project that pairs a thriving for-profit hotel business with a nonprofit foundation to offer educational opportunities, job training, and financial support for the community's young people. Mr. Berry, an accomplished lawyer, hotelier, and sailing captain, brings more than twenty years of professional, social, and philanthropic experience to his efforts for the Foundation.
How to Get Involved
The Foundation is actively seeking donations of funds and educational supplies to support its efforts. Donors can get involved in any number of ways, including:
- School Uniform Project: USD $30 provides a (mandatory in Nicaragua) school uniform and shoes for a student. To sponsor uniforms for an entire school costs just $1,350! All uniforms are made locally by women in the community, providing additional jobs and local financial support.
- Scholarship Fund: Sponsor an individual secondary school student by providing USD $30 per month for tuition, or USD $75-200 per month for a year for a university student. Sponsors receive information about their student and have the opportunity to correspond with or meet the students whenever possible.
- School Supplies & Books: Students — and their schools need school supplies, books, clothing, backpacks, and other basic goods for their education. Contact us for the current supplies "wish list."
- Community & Environmental Projects: The Foundation's ten-acre nature reserve offers a unique way for the students and surrounding community to learn about nature and long-term preservation efforts. Funds and supplies are needed to facilitate reforestation projects, construction of nature trails, and more. Additionally, annual student-driven community projects — such as trash collection, water management, and ecology education — often require specific types of supplies, tools, or resources. Email us for information on how to contribute goods, services, or funds for these important special projects.
- Vocational Training: Individuals with experience in the areas of ecology, environmental education, tourism, hospitality, construction, business administration, and others are excellent sources of education and training for students. If you are interested in volunteering your time in Nicaragua to train students in a variety of professional areas, please contact us.
